New York
New York's magnificent and slightly spooky gothic pile of a capitol was started in the same year the United States purchased Alaska from Russia, but cost much, much more ($25 million vs $7 million for Alaska). Construction lasted from 1867 to 1899, and, as rumor would have it, only stopped because Teddy Roosevelt, governor at the time, was tired of the noise.
